![]() Vasectomy
Currently there are only two contraceptive options available to men: condoms and vasectomy. Men whose families are complete or who are certain that they do not want children may want to consider having a vasectomy.
Any man who has doubts about wanting no more children should not consider this procedure. It is a permanent method of contraception.
Many myths exist about vasectomy. Some men are afraid the operation will be complicated and painful. The truth is the operation to seal the sperm-carrying tubes takes about five minutes and is carried out under anaesthetic.
Men often express fears that a vasectomy will ruin their sex lives, but there is no basis to this. Men find their sex lives are unaffected and sometimes even improve because there is no fear of pregnancy.
In a recent Marie Stopes International survey, over 90 per cent of vasectomy clients said they would encourage other men to opt for this procedure – not least because it gives women a break from the burden of contraception.
