Your Abortion Options
If you are between 5-7 weeks pregnant, you have the option of having either a medical abortion or a surgical abortion. Each option is explained below.
Medical Abortion
Marie Stopes International offers medical abortion as an alternative to a surgical procedure for pregnancies 7 weeks or less.
Mifepristone (RU486, or the abortion pill as it is commonly known) is not readily available in Australia. As an alternative to RU486, Marie Stopes International uses a combination of two drugs, Methotrexate and Misoprostol to induce abortion; a combination which has been used in Canada for the past 10 years.
In the case of medical abortion, a minimum of two visits are necessary to complete the treatment.

Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortion uses gentle suction to remove the pregnancy from the uterus. It is generally performed under some form of anaesthetic (usually local anaesthetic or “twilight” sedation) and is a safe, simple and modern procedure with a low risk of complication.
